Y a d’la joie was written in 1936 by Charles Trenet. He composed the music with Michel Emer. Trenet wrote the song as he was doing his national service in Istres where he got bored a lot. They say he created the song in order to keep up his spirits whiles weeping the courtyard of the barracks. It was performed for the first time on the stage of the Casino de Paris on 10 February 1937 by Maurice Chevalier.
